U.S. soldier accused of raping S. Korean teenager
South Korean prosecutors on Friday demanded a 15-year prison sentence for a U.S. soldier accused of raping a South Korean teenager last month.
"There's no room for sympathy as the offender committed a hideous crime against a young student. And it's hard to believe his claim that he was too drunk," a prosecutor told a court in the city of Uijeongbu, north of Seoul, Yonhap news agency reported.
The 21-year-old U.S. army private of the 2nd Infantry Division stationed in Dongducheon is charged with raping the 18-year-old girl after breaking into her dormitory-style apartment near his unit on Sept. 24.
The prosecutors also requested that the offender to complete a treatment program aimed at sex offenders and that his identity to be made public.
During a trip to Seoul earlier this month, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell apologized for "the tragic and inexcusable rape."
The U.S. military has also apologized for the incident and imposed a month-long curfew on its troops in the country.
The accused will face a final hearing on Nov. 1.
